Learning Objectives

Module 5 will cover epistemic and normative limitations and focus on moving systems towards desired change and transformation through legislation, international law, and multilateral environmental agreements. We will present sustainability indicators and assessment by identifying criteria, thresholds, and baselines. Scenarios are presented to illustrated varied case studies.

By the end of Module 5, students will be able to:

5.1: Examine the challenges to establishing the legal status of sustainable development.

5.2: Explain the pro/con differences between industry-oriented and justice-oriented alternative pathways for social change.

5.3: Explain the link between democracy, capitalism and sustainability.

5.4: Explain how “Think Globally, Act Locally” effects the role of civil society in governance.

5.5: Define and give examples of sustainability indicators and audits.

5.6: List the characteristics of effective indicators.

5.7: Recognize at least 5 MDG indicators and how they relate to sustainability.

5.8: Define a scenario with relation to a sustainability problem.

5.9: List the benefits of using scenario analysis as a methodology in sustainability science.

5.10: List the common characteristics that scenarios share.
