Consumerism and Christmas: Some thoughts

Christmas time is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Christ.

This Christmas I have had the time to spend meditating on how the traditional Christmas practices and habits seem to have little spiritual connection to the birth of Christ.

The consumer Christmas that is kept around by Saint Nicks gift haul under the tree isn’t a time of giving, but of demanding. We demand and expect expensive gifts. We demand the material items we find desirable. We insist we get everything on our list. We go to malls and stand in lines, all for the “spirit of Christmas”. We believe we do this somehow believing that we are connecting ourselves more to Jesus.

I am coming to realize, this Christmas, that some of the things we do to celebrate this holiday can increase Satan’s authority and not Christ’s authority in our lives and on the earth.

If you are reading this, I am not here to tell you what to think or how to celebrate.

I am simply asking that this Christmas, would you spend more time thinking of the “why” over the “what, or how”?

Think about who Jesus is, who is was, and who he will be. Ask him what his thoughts or feelings are about the American Christmas. Let him move your heart and your mind closer to him this holiday and reflect his attitudes in your traditions and celebrations- on Christmas and everyday.
